Ceramics in Aerospace

Aerospace Applications for Ceramics

The aerospace sector is under constant pressure to improve performance, whilst keeping weight and costs under control. From satellites and onboard instruments to advanced optical systems, every component must meet demanding technical standards and increasingly tight development timescales.

Additive Manufacturing is playing a growing role in meeting these challenges. One of its most valuable advantages is weight reduction, particularly for precision optical components where even small savings can have a significant impact. In aerospace, lighter parts mean improved efficiency and lower launch costs.

Ceramics are especially well suited to this environment. They offer excellent mechanical strength along with outstanding resistance to heat, corrosion and wear. Their electrical insulation properties are also highly valued in aerospace systems. Traditionally, however, ceramic components have been limited by manufacturing constraints, often resulting in simple or over engineered designs. Additive manufacturing changes this. It allows engineers to create complex geometries and optimised structures that would be extremely difficult, or even impossible, to achieve using conventional methods.

3DCeram supports aerospace manufacturers in adopting advanced ceramic additive manufacturing technologies. For example, our large format printer, the C3601 Ultimate, offers one of the largest build volumes available for ceramic 3D printing. This opens up new design possibilities for sizeable and lightweight components, including structural and optical parts such as satellite mirrors.

Ceramics in Aerospace

By combining high performance ceramic materials with design freedom, we help aerospace companies develop lighter, more efficient and highly reliable components suited to the most demanding environments.
