Rapid 3D Scan of a Railway Stop Buffer in Derby
3D Scanning with the FreeScan Trak Pro Nova and Geomagic software
Scanning large objects with a standard 3D scanner is challenging because most scanners are designed for small and medium sized objects. With larger items, the scanner’s limited field of view makes it difficult to capture everything without errors, and alignment often drifts over greater distances. Reflective or dark surfaces reduce accuracy, while changing light conditions can interfere with the process. In addition, larger scans generate huge amounts of data, which many consumer-level scanners and software struggle to process. That’s why in this project we used the FreeScan Trak Pro Nova from Shining3D. This new 3D Scanner solutions enables engineers to scan objects up to 20 metres in one go; and its wireless option allows you to walk around the object without struggling with cable management.
The project brief
We opened our offices for 2 open days focused on 3D Scanners & 3D Software, to launch new Shining3d products such as the EinScan Rigil, EinScan Libre, FreeScan Omni and the FreeScan Trak Pro Nova. To demonstrate the capacity of the FreeScan Trak Pro Nova for scanning large objects we 3D scanned a Railway Stop Buffer actually situated in our office building (an historic listed building used for train maintenance in Derby).
About the FreeScan Trak Pro Nova
The NOVA 3D Scanner is equipped with multiple scanning modes to accommodate different requirements: high-speed scanning with 50 laser lines, detailed scanning with 7 parallel laser lines, and deep pocket scanning with a single laser line. It provides a volumetric accuracy of 0.062 mm (12 m³), or 0.046 + 0.012 mm/m when using VPG, with no coded markers required. The system supports a flexible field of view up to 2600 × 2200 mm, and offers both wireless and fibre-optic wired connectivity. Depth of field extends from 380 mm (TE Nova, 170–550 mm) to 2700 mm (UE Nova, 800–3500 mm), enabling precise measurement across a wide range of applications.
